A tough beautiful native to the Pacific Coast. Deep purple-green, glossy leaflets are arranged in long rows. Sharply spined, they need to planted where people will not brush against them. Bright golden flowers in spring give way to powdery blue berries in summer. Good choice for sunny locations with minimal water in summer. In winter the leaves take on a scarlet-red cast.
