New popular dwarf form of Japanese maple with bright red-purple foliage on a dense, low shrub. New growth emerges bright red changes to deep purple-red and keeps that color through the season. Fall color is scarlet red. Young plants will grow quite vigorously but slow down with age. Habit is a dense and rounded with foliage clustered at branch tips. Leaves are minature compared to regular palmatum types. Popular for container culture or rock gardens.

Reputed to be a branch sport or "witches broom" of 'Bloodgood'. Very suceptible to various fungal diseases, especially pseudmonus types. If growing in a container, keep covered from winter rains for disease control.
